Groundworks & Landscaping
Everything under the building, and everything around it
Groundworks is the least visible money you will spend and the most expensive to get wrong. Drainage that does not fall, a patio laid to no crossfall, a retaining wall with no drainage behind it — all of it comes back, usually in the first wet winter.
We do our own groundworks rather than subcontracting them, which is why our new builds and extensions start on time. We also take on landscaping as a job in its own right: driveways, terraces, steps, levels and planting.
Foundations, drainage and service runs
Excavation, muck-away, strip and trench-fill foundations, floor slabs, foul and surface water drainage, soakaways, and the ducting for power, water and data laid before anything is built over it.
Levels, retaining and steps
Kent gardens are rarely flat. Retaining walls with proper drainage behind them, terracing, steps and ramps, set out so the finished levels work with the house's damp course rather than burying it.
Driveways, patios and paths
Block paving, resin, gravel and natural stone; sandstone and porcelain terraces laid on a full mortar bed with the right falls and joints. We set out crossfalls before laying, which is why the water ends up in the drain and not against the wall.
Planting, turf and finishing the garden
Topsoil, turf, beds, edging and planting to finish a project rather than leaving you with a building site and a wheelbarrow. On a renovation or new build this is normally the last week of the programme.
